EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES WITH FINANCIAL LITERACY
Kagiso TV and Communications was commissioned by Liberty, to conduct a Financial Literacy Campaign in various communities across the country. Lima was invited to encourage participants from its programmes, to take part in the campaign which aimed at encouraging responsible money management.
“Wants are often misinterpreted as needs, it is important for the participants to distinguish between the two so as to avoid debt and rather encourage saving,” said Gabriel Shezi, who led the campaign for the participants in Pietermaritzburg.
Knowledge and information about financial matters is important in assisting people to make more informed choices about their money. The campaign covered key issues around saving, budgeting, debt management and how insurance works.
“The topics covered helped our farmers understand ways of maximising their profits, by selecting where the best place is to sell their produce as well as negotiating the best retail price,” said Phelokazi Tikana, a Lima facilitator in Mthatha.
All workshops were sponsored by Liberty and were run at no cost to the participants involved. There was indeed positive feedback from the farmers and CWP participants, who commented that the campaign has helped them to budget accurately and improve their future skills for small scale investment.
